An improved Carver-Birmingham squad gave Class 5A No. 2 Pleasant Grove everything it wanted on Thursday night at Carver.

But the ground game of Brandon Simmonsand Terry Stewart was too much in the Spartans’ 28-23 win.

Stewart, the Spartans’ quarterback, ran for 155 yards on 10 carries, scoring on runs of 75 and 52 yards. His 75-yard scamper on the first play of the second half gave the Spartans a 14-10 lead, one it wouldn’t relinquish. Stewart also threw for 93 yards.

Carver jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Pleasant Grove fought back. Tim Coats scored on a 22-yard run in the second quarter and Simmons was the workhorse, rushing for 195 yards on 32 carries. His 48-yard run in the fourth quarter gave the Spartans a 28-16 lead.

Carver quarterback Chappelle Wade threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to TeDarrion Roper in the first quarter. In the fourth, the Rams scored twice – once on a 9-yard run by Wade and again on a 17-yard run by Joshua Rice.

It was a bad night on the injury front for both teams. Carver lost at least two starting linemen. Pleasant Grove was without sophomore Myles Mason, who has an Alabama offer. He was not dressed out and had a sling on.

Coach Jim Elgin fears that Coats suffered a season-ending knee injury. Sean Brown, a three-star offensive line recruit, went down with a knee injury on the second play. Running back Jordan Acoff left the game with an elbow injury. Aside from Coats, the others may return to action this season.

“We about ran out of bodies,” Elgin said. “We got a lot of people hurt right now. The one good thing about it is that next week is non-region and we’ll have a chance to heal up. I thought our kids played with a lot of heart and kept playing.”

Pleasant Grove (4-0, 3-0 Region 5) is at Hueytown next week while Carver (2-2, 2-1) is at Woodlawn.
